In recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the Motown Record Label, we would like to spotlight probably the most prolific arranger of hits of all time! He was recently certified by Berry Gordy (founder of Motown) as an official “Funk Brother.” This unheralded group of musicians has played on more number one hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles combined! The person at the helm arranging all these hits during the golden years of Motown is none other than, Paul Riser! He is one of the originators and a chief designer of the Motown Sound!

A Quick History on the Electric Guitar

The electric guitar hasn't been around that long. It is only 70 years old, but it had gone through many changes during it's first 20 or so years. The first electric guitar was manufactured by Adolph Rickenbacker in the 1930s. The original electric guitars had pick-ups that used tungsten. Pickups convert the vibration from the plucked guitar string into electrical current, which is fed into an amplifier that produces the sound.

Guitar Influences: Melvin "Wah-Wah" Watson

Melvin Ragin, aka Melvin "Wah-Wah" Watson is one of the funkiest guitarists around. He is the master in the use a guitar effect known as the "wah-wah pedal". You can hear his work in the Tempatation's "Papa Is A Rolling Stone" or "Masterpiece" as well in other hits by other Motown dignitaries as the Jackson 5, The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips and the Four Tops.  His most recent work is with Alicia Keys' 2005 release,  "Unplugged".

This is my first in a series of guitarists that I admire for their quality guitar work and my inspiration to learn to play the guitar.

Scotty Moore, one of the greatest guitarist of Rock and Roll is one of the talented guitarists that I admire. If you're no familiar with Scotty Moore, he was Elvis Presley's during the RCA Victors recordings until Elvis began doing Hollywood movies.
